Counting
Knowing how numbers work and how to move around them.
The words your child may use
If your child's school uses Big Maths, you may have heard these words at home. They are also the two kinds of practice in the Big Maths Beat That! app.
CLIC stands for Counting, Learn Its, It's Nothing New and Calculation. It is the order in which Big Maths builds the basic skills of maths.
Knowing how numbers work and how to move around them.
The number facts children need to recall.
Seeing that a new step is a small change to something they already know.
Using all of that to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
Learn Its are addition facts and times tables facts, such as 6 + 4 = 10 or 7 x 8 = 56. The aim is recall: knowing the answer without working it out.
Each fact opens the door to more. A child who knows 6 + 4 = 10 also has 4 + 6, 10 - 4 and 10 - 6. Learn Its Practice in the app explores these related facts together.

In school, Beat That! is the weekly challenge where each child tries to beat their own previous score. The app takes its name from that idea: your child's target is always their own last step, never another child.
A short Baseline finds two separate starting points, one for Learn Its and one for CLIC, so practice begins from what your child already knows. CLIC is arranged in levels made of small steps, and your child moves on when the steps are secure.
